A self-taught merchant of Evwreni who rose from petty trading to become one of the leading businessmen of the old Warri Province. He became the central figure of the early pan-Urhobo movement, serving as the first President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union from 1937 until his death, and representing Warri Province in the Western House of Assembly. He is widely remembered as the foremost symbol of Urhobo unity and progress.
An early Urhobo statesman, born at Evwreni, who served as secretary-general of the Urhobo Progress Union from 1935 and held the title Olorogun of Evwreni. He became the first Governor of the Mid-Western Region, serving from 1964 to 1966, the region from which Delta State would later be carved.
A Sandhurst-trained soldier, born at Ovu, who became the first Military Governor of the Mid-Western Region (1966 to 1967) and Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army (1971 to 1975). The 1971 dinner held in his honour in Lagos gave rise to the scholarship fund and fellowship from which the Urhobo Social Club Lagos was founded in 1973. In retirement he served as President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union.
A chartered accountant and University of Lagos alumnus from Okpare in Olomu Kingdom. His career spanned the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank, Unilever and Ernst & Young in the United Kingdom, and Phillips Oil Company of Nigeria, which he joined in 1983, and he chairs EXECON Holdings. Long the President of the Olomu Development Union, he was elected President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union Worldwide in 2017.
An educationist, businessman and proprietor of Westminster College, Lagos, born at Ovu Inland in Agbon Kingdom. He served as a former President and later Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Urhobo Social Club Lagos, and as a Trustee of the Urhobo Progress Union Worldwide. He was widely respected as a unifier who gave generously of himself to settle disputes within the Urhobo diaspora.
Industrialists, publishers and professionals whose enterprise carried the Urhobo name across Nigeria and beyond, including the celebrated Ibru family of Agbarha-Otor.
Founder of the Ibru Organization, one of Africa's largest indigenous conglomerates. From 1957 he pioneered frozen-fish distribution in Nigeria and built a group spanning fishing, agriculture, motors, shipping, hospitality and more. Made an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic in 1981, he and his wife Cecilia Ibru are associated with the Michael and Cecilia Ibru University at Agbarha-Otor.
An architect and businessman, brother of Michael Ibru, who became the first democratically elected Governor of Delta State, in office from January 1992 to November 1993, and is widely credited with initiating the master plan for the capital, Asaba. He later served as Senator for Delta Central and, until his death, as President-General of the Urhobo Progressive Union; he was honoured as Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Publisher and businessman, brother of Michael and Felix Ibru. In 1983 he founded The Guardian, which became one of Nigeria's most respected newspapers, and he served as Minister of Internal Affairs from 1993 to 1995. He survived an assassination attempt in 1996 and was honoured as Commander of the Order of the Niger.
A lawyer and hotelier, brother of Michael, Felix and Alex Ibru. He founded Ikeja Hotel Plc in 1975, launched the Sheraton Lagos in 1985, and served as President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange from 1997 to 2000. He was honoured as an Officer of the Order of the Niger and received the Zik Prize in 2014.
A distinguished chartered accountant and politician, born in Sapele. He founded the firm that became Horwath Dafinone, and the Dafinone family holds the Guinness World Record for the most chartered accountants in one family. He served as Senator for Bendel South in the Second Republic (1979 to 1983) and was honoured as an Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Urhobo leaders who have served in the highest offices of Delta State and the Nigerian federation.
Born in Oghara, he served as Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007, completing two terms on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. His tenure is associated with road construction and rural-development programmes across the state, and he has remained an influential figure in Delta and national politics.
An economist and technocrat of Urhobo heritage, with degrees from the University of Lagos and Cardiff and an Advanced Management Programme at Harvard. He served as Delta State Commissioner for Finance (1999 to 2005 and again 2015 to 2019), Principal Secretary to President Yar'Adua (2008 to 2010) and Chief of Staff to Governor Okowa (2019 to 2021). He contested the 2023 Delta governorship primary, which the Supreme Court resolved in favour of Sheriff Oborevwori in October 2022.
A lawyer of the Orogun clan, admitted to the Nigerian and California bars. He was elected Senator for Delta Central in 2015 and served as Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate from 2019 to 2023, the first senator from Delta State to hold that office. He was conferred a national honour in 2022.
A lawyer and human-rights activist, born in Ughelli, who trained in the chambers of Gani Fawehinmi before building a national practice and was elevated to Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2017. He served as a Minister of State under President Buhari (2019 to 2023) and was appointed Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development in 2023. He holds the honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Born in Osubi in Okpe, he began in public service as a councillor and rose to become Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly from 2017 to 2023. He won the 2023 Delta State governorship election and was sworn in as Governor on 29 May 2023. He also runs the Oborevwori Foundation scholarship scheme.
